A plein air painting from 2023, in oil on wood.
Plein air – that is, working outdoors – also means being quite defenceless against the forces of nature, such as the wind. What I particularly like about this painting is how clearly this is evident in the paint surface, which has been partially damaged by blades of grass. As an originally unintended effect, this complements the partly reductive approach (scratched-in blades of grass) well and, as a result, captures the character of the dunes all the more authentically.&
As the backing board is made from reclaimed wood, the work has a deliberately rustic look, which harmonises well with the impasto application of paint. I naturally prepared and pre-treated the panel thoroughly before painting it, whilst allowing a few of the wood’s natural textures to show through. Before posting it, I will stick a paper seal (copperplate engraving) onto the back. Holes have also been drilled to allow it to be easily hung on one or two nails; see the example photo as the last image in the gallery.

I began my artistic career with an apprenticeship as a stonemason and sculptor. I am now studying figurative painting at Alanus University in Andreas Orosz’s class.
The subjects of my paintings are varied, and what they all have in common is, above all, a wide-ranging interest in the world. I pursue my spirit of discovery using various methods; sometimes I paint from memory, but whenever possible I also enjoy painting ‘en plein air’ on location. My enjoyment of various photographic techniques also helps me to engage with a subject.
