Artist Portraits – Interviews with art students
Artist of the Month: Jonathan Lützen
I am studying illustration in my fourth semester of my Bachelor’s degree at the HAW in Hamburg. The course focuses on illustrative topics, giving students the opportunity to work on their own projects using a variety of techniques. I focus mainly on painting and practise printmaking, but I’m also taking a comics course with Anke Feuchtenberger. However, I also try to depict my comics in a painterly style, because I simply enjoy working with colour and layers the most.
Artist of the Month: Hans Vinzenz Seidel
From 2008 to 2013, I studied in the Painting and Printmaking class under Prof. Erwin Gross at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, and from 2015 to 2016 I studied Intermedia Design under Prof. Wolfgang Mayer and Prof. Christina Gomez Barrio (Discoteca Flaming Star) at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart.
Artist of the Month: Jana Gruszeninks
I work in my studio at the Academy of Fine Art in Karlsruhe. The building is a historic structure with a special
atmosphere, high ceilings and plenty of light. I share one of the rooms with other students from my class, so
there’s actually always someone there to chat to.
Once a year, all students at the Art Academy exhibit their work as part of the annual exhibition; for this, all studios are cleared out and transformed into
exhibition spaces. In the summer, however, I might sometimes tuck my canvas under my arm
and head off into the woods with it for several hours.
Artist of the Month: Christian Herzig
Christian Herzig, born in Bad Salzungen in 1975, is a painter whose artistic journey is deeply rooted in the tradition of the Leipzig School. He learnt his craft at the renowned Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Art in Leipzig, where he initially studied under Arno Rink and later honed his skills in the class taught by Neo Rauch, one of the best-known representatives of the Leipzig School. This training shaped his artistic identity and laid the foundation for his multifaceted approach to painting.
Artist of the Month: Valerie Cee
I mainly paint with acrylics on canvas. However, I also frequently combine new materials and colours.
When I have plenty of time and inspiration, I also experiment with paper. I make the paper myself, dry it and paint on it. It’s a really exciting process for me.
Interview with Felix Dörrenbecher
Existential and moral questions – such as whether there is such a thing as right and wrong at all, or whether
worldly events, viewed from above, are merely an abstract sequence of events – are
topics that constantly occupy my thoughts.Whilst it may happen that I engage quite
specifically with certain issues – such as, most recently, the tradition of
bullfighting – on the whole I try to follow my intuition
in the painting process. As a result, the themes and emotions that I
ponder during the day automatically flow into my work
Interview with Lina Czerny
In my latest series, “ARMOR”, I explored the shell that surrounds the body, its surface and structure. The works pay homage to this physical shell, which can be fragile, strong, diverse, adaptable and changeable, and the photographs reveal the beauty and complexity of our protective shell.
Artist interview with Christopher Schröder
I love oil paints and linen canvas; I just can’t get away from these materials. Even though they’ve been around for ages, I love their prestige and versatility. I’m also currently working with a wide variety of techniques, and glazing – that is, applying wafer-thin layers of paint one on top of the other – plays a particularly significant and important role in my work.
Artist Interview: QIANQIAN LI
QIANQIAN LI is studying art at the Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences in Bonn

Moritz Maas is a versatile artist based in Witten, Germany, who specialises in painting, visual art and filmmaking.
Interview with artist Judit Flamich: Go out and have a look around!
When I paint en plein air, because of the weather and lighting conditions, I have to quickly choose a natural scene or vantage point – including the perspective – within the chosen surroundings, which will then look good in the finished painting...
Interview with the artist Julia Solemacher
I am studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolbermoor, currently in the second of three years of the diploma course in painting under Heribert Heindl, Helmut Geier and Nina Kohlmann.
Artist interview with Leonel Perez
Over the past few months, my art has engaged extensively with the field of Orientalism. The focus has been on the iconoclastic impact of Edward Said’s book *Orientalism*, published in 1978. The term ‘Orientalism’ is a critical concept that describes the disparaging portrayal of the East – that is, the Orient – which is common in the West.
Artist of the Month: Adrian Ferdinand
In his photographic work, Adrian Ferdinand explores his immediate surroundings, focusing on the incidental and the everyday. His primary areas of interest include (sub)culture, social life, fashion, values and the question of personal identity.
“A painting breaks the mould” – A conversation with Anna Hopfensberger.
Today I’m meeting an artist who has been represented by the Student Art Market for some time now: Anna Hopfensberger. As her studio is in Munich, we’re meeting in the ‘centre’: on Zoom. Anna Hopfensberger is an art student at the Free Academy of Fine Arts in Kolbermoor.
Artist Interview with Nele Dorn
Nele Dorn is studying sculpture at Alanus University and is our Artist of the Month. We’re delighted to find out a bit more about her.
