Christian Herzig, born in Bad Salzungen in 1975, is a painter whose artistic career is deeply rooted in the tradition of the Leipzig School. He learnt his craft at the renowned Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Art in Leipzig, where he initially studied under Arno Rink and later honed his skills in the class taught by Neo Rauch, one of the best-known representatives of the Leipzig School. This training shaped his artistic identity and laid the foundation for his multifaceted approach to painting.
What themes feature in your work?
As a painter, I’m interested in nature. For many years, I painted outdoors in nature, directly in front of the subject. Seeing and studying the subjects in real life right in front of me always seemed very appealing and important to me. I enjoyed painting in the woods, in gardens, by lakes and by the sea.
What materials and techniques do you prefer to work with?
Because I live in Germany, where the winter months are long and cold, and painting outdoors was difficult, I started painting people in my studio. This eventually led me to take an interest in the depiction of people in nature, as well as in the concept of beauty that humans have created for themselves through their own representation in photography. I began to discover photographs as a source of inspiration for myself. I’m also interested in the depiction of women in nature. Photographs of all kinds – from books, fashion catalogues and social media – serve as my models.

What role do the colours you use play?
I prefer to paint with oil paints because I really like their brilliance and intensity of colour.
Sometimes you paint abstract works, other times figurative ones – where does that come from?
I also enjoy painting abstract works because they allow me to express myself more freely. I like to paint the things and people around me – my daughter, my girlfriend and the children in the back garden. These works are mostly to be found on my website. But because I also need to sell paintings, I often paint decorative subjects such as women by the sea or sailing boats.
Where do you paint?
I paint in my studio and also outdoors in nature.
How did you come across the Student Art Market and what has been your experience?
A collector recommended the Student Art Market website to me. So far, I’ve had nothing but positive experiences, as I was able to sell several pieces within the first two weeks.
Christian Herzig’s work is characterised by a deep connection to nature, an interest in the human figure and an experimental openness to new forms of expression. This stylistic diversity makes him a unique artist whose works impress with their depth and complexity. In a world that often strives for clarity and unambiguity, Herzig’s art is a celebration of the beauty of diversity and pluralism in art.
