Lina Czerny

Lina Czerny is our Artist of the Month for March 2024. We asked her a few questions to find out more about her photography.

You are the ‘Studierenden Kunstmarkt’ Artist of the Month. Congratulations!

Thank you!

Where are you studying, and what are you studying?

I’m studying photography in Göran Gnaudschun’s class at the Ostkreuzschule.

Do you prefer digital or analogue photography?

I actually prefer analogue photography, but I also do a lot digitally.

Your work often depicts surfaces: skin, fur, scales, etc. What significance does depicting these surfaces hold for you?

In my latest series, ‘ARMOR’, I explored the shell that surrounds the body, its surface and structure. The works are a tribute to this physical shell, which can be fragile, strong, diverse, adaptable and changeable, and the photographs reveal the beauty and complexity of our protective shell.

You often photograph people who are perceived as female – does that have any special significance for you?

It’s very important to me that the people I photograph feel at ease during the session, and I think I have a pretty good instinct for assessing situations and creating a safe space. I can understand myself that, particularly in intimate moments, it can be more comfortable to be photographed by a woman. For me, photographing people who are perceived as female is something special every single time.

How has the use of colour evolved in your photography?

I love spotting colour patterns and natural colour combinations, and letting them inspire me – colour has always been an important part of my work.

In the piece ‘Shell’, an egg appears to be floating – how did you stage this surreal scene?

I placed the egg in water and photographed it with a wide aperture to give the impression that it was floating.

Do you prefer to take photos spontaneously or in the studio?

It really depends on the setting; for me, the story behind it is what matters, rather than the location where I’m taking the photos.

Is there a photographer whose work you find particularly fascinating?

I draw inspiration from many photographers and am constantly discovering new ones, but Rineke Dijkstra’s photographs never fail to impress me.

How would you describe your style?

Through my style, I try to find a way to reinterpret themes that I find socially, politically or culturally compelling in an artistic form that I find aesthetically appealing.

Frequently Asked Questions
