Oil on canvas, wooden support panel
The defining feature of this small-scale series of paintings is live observation, which I capture using a rapid painting style. I apply the oil paints undiluted and in a thick, impasto style to the canvas, allowing the resulting works to immediately capture a very specific atmosphere.
The subject – a detail of an interior with the focus entirely on the view outwards (the neighbouring house covered in vines) – primarily explores the contrast between the light colours. Thanks also to its classical composition, it exudes a sense of orderly tranquillity that I particularly like.
The painting is executed on a wooden panel which I have covered with canvas; this combines the advantageous properties of both supports: wood is particularly suitable as a support material for oil paints due to its hardness, especially as these harden completely over time. The canvas overlay, in turn, protects the paint layer from the wood’s natural movement.
Before posting it, I will drill three holes in the back to allow it to be hung on one or two nails. I will also affix a paper seal (copperplate engraving); an example of this can be seen in the gallery.
Valentin Weller
I began my artistic career with an apprenticeship as a stonemason and sculptor. I am now studying figurative painting at Alanus University in Andreas Orosz’s class.
The subjects of my paintings are varied, and what they all have in common is, above all, a wide-ranging interest in the world. I pursue my spirit of discovery using various methods; sometimes I paint from memory, but whenever possible I also enjoy painting ‘en plein air’ on location. My enjoyment of various photographic techniques also helps me to engage with a subject.
