The Middle is part of the Kopflos series, which explores moments of mental absence. States in which body and mind are not in the same place, in which we let go of constant rational thought and simply dwell in the moment.
Whilst working on this piece, I encountered a moth. It was an Elephant Hawk Moth, a symbol of change. This encounter altered my perception of the work. *The Middle* depicts a state of in-between, between holding on and moving on, between presence and memory. Two headless figures who are physically present but mentally detached. They represent the conscious enjoyment of the moment, closeness and lightness.
Aileen Clausager
Aileen Clausager, born in 1999, is an international visual artist from northern Germany whose expressive painting explores the space between the human figure and abstraction.
At the heart of her work lies the depiction of the human body and portraiture. Using bold, vibrant colours and a dynamic interplay between naturalism and abstraction, she strikes a fluid balance between precise observation and imaginative interpretation.
Her current artistic practice is a personal expression of her identity – sometimes ‘headless’.
As an artist, Aileen Clausager often finds herself daydreaming or losing touch with the present moment. Her series visually express the feeling of ‘being headless’ – an existence beyond the boundaries of rational thought. As a daydreamer, Aileen explores the concept of separation from the mental and rational aspects of the self. The series invites the viewer to reflect on their own moments of mental digression, in which the body remains active whilst the mind is free.
Her works are not only recognised in her home country but are also gaining an ever-growing following across Europe. Furthermore, her works are exhibited internationally in various properties of the Meliá Hotel Group.
