constructs his paintings using a multi-layered technique, usually applied wet-on-wet. The portrait emerges layer by layer, with the underlying layers deliberately remaining visible and actively contributing to the composition. He uses spray paint in both a destructive and a constructive manner.
In his art, he explores questions of identity and anonymity, and how these can be made visible or concealed. The spray paint and the deliberately destructive elements create an emotional distance and shift the portrait into a deliberately open, ambiguous form.
Paul Schäfer has been studying art history at LMU in Munich since 2022.
2018 to 2026: Pupil of the Munich-based artist Moritz Thoma, studying techniques of classical oil painting, as well as the theory of proportion and charcoal drawing.
