Artist Statement
:
During his studies at the HfBK Dresden, Tran experimented with various painterly approaches. His early works focus intensively on the study of the figure, still life and landscape through direct observation. During this phase, his aim was to hone his ability to observe nature attentively and to translate what he saw into the medium of painting. At the same time, these works demonstrate his endeavour to grasp and understand the fundamental principles of composition, colour and pictorial structure. They are strongly influenced by the Dresden painting tradition, as well as by British modern painters such as Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff, and by artists from the Bay Area, such as Richard Diebenkorn. Trans’s early works are often characterised by a reduced colour palette and are marked by a rich, impasto texture, which lends the paintings a distinct physicality and at times makes them appear almost sculptural.
Over time, he began to explore figurative and abstract visual worlds with equal intensity, bringing the two into dialogue with one another. His deep understanding of his models lends his figurative paintings a distinct intimacy. At the same time, Tran creates abstract compositions with multi-layered, textured surfaces and organic forms reminiscent of the human figure. Each composition develops gradually and is built up layer by layer, resulting in a richly textured surface that conveys a sense of depth, time and hidden history. These later works mark a transition from a restrained colour palette to a more vibrant and expressive one. Nevertheless, Tran deliberately avoids excessively pure or saturated hues, instead maintaining an organic, natural quality in his use of colour. The artist describes his figurative and abstract bodies of work as being in constant dialogue: each provides insights and solutions to challenges that arise in the other, thus forming a dynamic, interdependent artistic process.
Tran is currently completing his Master’s degree and is constantly seeking new ways to further develop his artistic language. Building on the knowledge and skills he acquired during his degree studies, he is developing a new direction in his work that is more narrative in nature and incorporates symbols, narrative elements and more complex figurative compositions. This development makes his paintings more emotional and personal, revealing intimate experiences and insights that span from his childhood to the present day.
Trans SKM’s website features numerous works from various stages of his development, right up to his most recent pieces.
