Marlene Hick

In her artistic practice, Marlene Hick explores the concept of the ‘organoid’ (from the Greek ὄργανον, ‘órganon’ – organ, tool – and εἶδος, ‘eidos’ – kind, form, shape). Her works navigate between the visible, the intuited and the supposedly true – which may be microscopic cellular structures, fundamental social assumptions or personal experiences. In doing so, are power dynamics or hierarchical categories of difference deliberately distorted, treated with humour, or perhaps simply ignored? At the heart of her practice lies an exploratory approach that does not pursue a fixed goal, but rather emphasises the unfinished and the mutable. Ontological questions about the nature of things – about what becomes visible, what remains and what eludes us – form an essential point of reference. By refusing to provide definitive answers, her works seek to reflect the urge to interpret and thus resist any unambiguous reading.

Marlene Hick (she/her) completed her Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art Education at the Institute of Art Education at Justus Liebig University Giessen in 2024. She is currently studying Fine Art – Artistic Concepts (MA) at the Institute of Fine Art at Philipps University of Marburg.
