Aimée Bunse
She works without preliminary sketches and builds up her paintings in many layers. The painting process is open, responsive and rapid. Forms emerge as she works, are painted over, shifted or dissolved. Traces remain visible and coalesce into a pictorial state suspended between stillness and movement.
In her paintings, she explores the breaking down and overcoming of personal and societal boundaries. Bunse examines identity and the search for a sense of home and belonging, as well as the question of how a female* person can occupy and make use of space. The breaking down of order is not manifested as a clear-cut moment, but as a fragile state between resistance and rejection. Aimée Bunse frequently uses herself as the protagonist, alongside photographs from WhatsApp family chats and memories, as her starting point.
