Lilly Oehler
Please introduce yourself briefly and answer the following questions:
Hello, I’m Lilly.
I’m currently in the final stages of my Bachelor’s degree at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts and will then be starting my Master’s. I’m studying in Marijke van Warmerdan’s class and, alongside organising local political art and cultural events, I also do a lot of painting and printmaking.
In my paintings, I focus primarily on ‘lost places’, abandoned structures, and themes of destruction and regeneration.
I seek out old, abandoned factories, houses, hospitals and other forgotten spaces to capture them on canvas. These places serve as windows into the past, evoking memories and transporting us to another time, whilst at the same time being subject to the inexorable passage of time as they fall victim to decay and are reclaimed by nature or human intervention such as vandalism.
I perceive bright colours – or, more precisely, the ‘afterimage’ of light that I see when I look into a bright light for too long – as yellow-green, and shadows more as pink-purple. This influences the colour palette I work with and enables me to convey the surreal and otherworldly feeling I experience in these places.
