Marie-Luisa Christian

Marie-Luisa Christian (born 1997) is in her fifth semester of her Master’s degree in Art at the Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. In her painting, she explores the abstract representation of inner processes. Her works arise from an intensive engagement with emotions and personal experiences. She sees her works as an expression of individual perceptions and sensations.

The artist works with pigments and tempera, combining these with drawing elements such as charcoal, pencil or oil pastel. Lines and planes enter into a lively dialogue, giving rise to dynamic, expressive compositions. She chooses her painting surface – wood, paper or canvas – deliberately, as each surface allows the colours to appear in a different way.

She draws inspiration from artists such as Tracey Emin, Cy Twombly and Theresa Kraft, amongst others. Her working process is characterised by an interplay between spontaneous gestures and conscious decisions, whereby the aim is less a planned composition than the authentic representation of inner states.
