“The ‘Akiya’ art project (Japanese for ‘vacant house’) was created during a year-long stay abroad. There are currently over nine million such properties in Japan. For me, they became windows into Japan’s recent history and visible traces of urban change. In my neighbourhood in Tokyo, there were a great many of these houses, which I visited by bike and sketched and photographed on site.
I then combined my drawing and the photograph using a two-stage screen-printing process to capture the atmosphere of this liminal state. The titles of the prints refer to the Japanese addressing system, which consists of district, block and building, rather than a street address.”

“In my work, I seek out places where something contemporary is emerging or where shifts are becoming visible. I am interested in the surfaces, colours and forms through which these changes materialise, and how they affect me. I trace these traces and attempt to translate them into painting and drawing.”
