8x5 emerges from a sustained tension between control and collapse. Within an apparently rigid format – eight rows by five columns – repetition is constantly disrupted by gestural marks that spill beyond the structure. This friction between the grid (Deleuze’s ‘striated space’) and affective expression (the ‘smooth space’) creates a surface where subjectivity is not represented but inscribed through materiality.
Each unit can be read as an event: not a fixed meaning, but a site of difference and relation. Through the germinal chaos, colour does not illustrate but instead emerges as a remnant of the struggle with the canvas. In this process, knowledge is suspended and replaced by an active form of unknowing, a persistent suspicion of what is already known.
