The work ABSTRACTION I (TREE) straddles the line between painterly gesture and digital transformation. Its starting point is a minimalist depiction of a landscape in which the tree appears as an archetypal motif – solitary, shadowy, almost like a shadow of memory.
In its creation, classical painting intertwines with artificial intelligence: the original visual concept was reinterpreted through digital processes, alienated and shifted into the abstract. The result is a surface that is at once reminiscent of traditional painting techniques, yet unmistakably marked by a machine’s ‘signature’.
The collaboration between human and AI opens up a space of possibility here: the tree remains recognisable, yet its contours blur, dissolve and transform into an atmosphere that conveys emotion rather than form.
ABSTRACTION I (TREE) is thus less a representation than a reflection – on nature, memory and the possibilities of an artistic practice that explores the dialogue between analogue and digital processes.

Emiliano Bartling
Since 2024, his work has been supported by a grant from the Cusanuswerk’s renowned artist support programme.
His works are characterised by a conceptual approach to painting that appears almost three-dimensional and sculptural. A field of tension emerges between the pictorial and the abstract, drawing on art-historical references as well as contemporary pop culture, internet aesthetics and technical visual worlds. With humour and a passion for materials, he questions norms and viewing habits, thereby striking a unique balance between seriousness and wit.
