A study in oil on canvas, 2023
The painting was created in the style of the work ‘Lixeira II’ (shown in the last image in the gallery). Both paintings share the same urban setting as their subject. In this study, however, I explored the biblical figure of Adam in a contemporary setting. The wall in the background conceals the lost paradise. The motif was originally inspired by a trip to Praia (the capital of Cape Verde).
The painting is executed on a coarse flax canvas mounted onto a wood fibre board. The firm yet flexible substrate is particularly well-suited to oil paints, which harden over time.
The painting is signed on the reverse, bears a paper seal (copperplate engraving) and is varnished before dispatch.
Valentin Weller
I began my artistic career with an apprenticeship as a stonemason and sculptor. I am now studying figurative painting at Alanus University in Andreas Orosz’s class.
The subjects of my paintings are varied, and what they all have in common is, above all, a wide-ranging interest in the world. I pursue my spirit of discovery using various methods; sometimes I paint from memory, but whenever possible I also enjoy painting ‘en plein air’ on location. My enjoyment of various photographic techniques also helps me to engage with a subject.
