This work depicts a powerful yet gentle figure, somewhere between human and machine. A figure who embodies freedom, who rises up, lifts her head and closes her eyes to fully savour the moment. With outstretched wings, she stands before the vast expanse of the Spanish Pyrenees — on her way to scaling a mountain. Yet at this very moment, she pauses. She takes a deliberate break, breathes deeply and allows calm, clarity and renewed energy to wash over her.
This moment of stillness is not a retreat, but a sign of strength. It is the moment when body and mind come back into harmony. The harmony between movement and stillness, between the goal and the present moment, becomes visible here. The artwork serves as a reminder that taking a break is not a sign of weakness, but a necessary part of the journey — a space to feel, to gather one’s thoughts and to carry on with renewed strength.
I painted this picture because I believe that we should allow ourselves to slow down. That we may take the time to breathe mindfully, to connect with ourselves and to appreciate the moment. This work represents mindfulness, inner balance and the courage to grant ourselves a moment of stillness even as we move forward.

Vanessa Marscholek
Her painting is characterised by a sensitive handling of oil as a medium, through which intimacy and presence unfold simultaneously. Figures emerge and assert themselves within the pictorial space without being clearly defined. They remain in motion, open to interpretation. This creates a tension between visibility and inner experience, inviting viewers to reflect on their own notions of freedom and identity.
Vanessa Marscholek has been studying Art Therapy (BA) at the Medical School Hamburg, Campus Arts and Social Change, since 2023 and is currently in her sixth semester.
From late 2023 to early 2026, she volunteered at the Habibi Atelier in Hamburg, where she was involved in the conception and organisation of exhibitions for charitable purposes. In this role, she collaborated with over 40 Hamburg-based artists and supported, amongst others, the Sternenbrücke children’s hospice (2024) and the Löwenhaus children’s and youth centre (2025).
She lives and studies in Hamburg.
