About the work.
“brutal” is an artistic series in which I explore the Brutalist style and transfer it from architecture to painting.
The perception of Brutalism is mostly negative these days. Heavy, old-fashioned, ugly and simply “brutal” are adjectives often used to describe these buildings. For me, however
,
it is precisely the opposite.
In my works, I aim to express feelings such as joy, confidence, hope and courage, particularly with regard to our future. In particular, this aims to emphasise the resulting contrasts, which are especially evident in terms of content.
“In my works, I see ancient beings breaking free from their old structures and striving towards a new, hopeful future.”
Tobias Schebelle
In his current series, ‘brutal’, he draws on the Brutalist style to illustrate how he perceives the world.
Brutalism, as an expression of the heavy, the gloomy, the raw and the ugly, hints at all the darker aspects of this world.
In his works, he creates contrasts between precisely these negative qualities and corresponding positive ones, such as lightness, fragility and aesthetics.
He hopes to be able to describe the world using these and many other positive adjectives.
