Nachdem ich jahrelang fast ausschließlich in Schwarz-Weiß gearbeitet habe, wuchs Ende 2024 der Wunsch mehr mit Farben zu arbeiten. So entstand die Serie Chromatic Chaos, als Teil des übergeordneten Themas Colorful Playground.

Um mich der Arbeit mit Farben anzunähern, habe ich mir dabei erlaubt einfach zu spielen – ohne Konzept, ohne Ziel, nur mit dem Wunsch, Farbe wieder zu fühlen. Es war ein Prozess voller Experimente, Übermalungen und Verwerfungen. Viele Werke sind dabei entstanden und wieder verschwunden.

Am Ende habe ich drei Arbeiten ausgewählt, die für mich diesen Moment des Loslassens und des Entdeckens am besten festhalten. Sie wurden mit einer Schicht Epoxidharz versiegelt, nicht nur, um die Farben zum Leuchten zu bringen, sondern auch, um diese kurze, intensive Phase meines künstlerischen Schaffens wie ein Erinnerungsstück zu bewahren.

Anna Lena Wirth

Hi, I’m Anna and I was born in Mönchengladbach in 1998. Creativity has played a major role in my life ever since I was a child, which is why, after completing my A-levels, I decided to study a combination of Art and German Studies, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Painting. Whilst studying art, I focused my practical work on the genres of painting and photography, learning mainly from Katja Pfeiffer and Christoph Westermeier. To this day, the aspects of art and language remain closely intertwined in my creative processes. Language plays a particularly significant role as a source of inspiration and during the development of the concepts for my works.

My aim has always been to portray people as individuals. For many years, I painted portraits, believing that people’s faces best reflect their identities. When, whilst studying art at the University of Wuppertal, I came into contact with dementia within my personal circle and attempted to depict the process of forgetting, I reached my limits. A person’s outward appearance could not reflect their inner processes. In search of a solution to my problem, I gradually moved away from depicting faces, until I eventually omitted them entirely. Since then, my works have played with the identities and realities of the people depicted. Through a blend of figurative, realistic and abstract elements, I allow the viewer to look behind the façade of faces, into the feelings and thoughts of the figures portrayed.

My in-depth exploration of this subject matter – including in my Bachelor’s thesis in painting – continues to shape my painting style to this day and inspires me to constantly reinterpret a wide variety of themes relating to the human condition. I prefer to work in series, in which I explore individual themes in depth and interpret them in various ways.
