Xeni Oikonomou

Xeni Oikonomou, Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (class of Prof. Olav Westphalen)

You ask me how art begins. For me – and I’ve only recently realised this – it’s people and places. People come first. Everything begins with them, and with that the relationships they forge amongst themselves and with places. That is the starting point for my work. It is from people and places that inspiration springs. I need larger surfaces to have more freedom. So as not to be constrained by boundaries, so as to have no barriers. I try to see the result of my imprint on the canvas without it being prepared. Not in order to achieve a ‘pure’ result. It is not my aim to create art that is ‘beautiful as it should be’, or whatever it may be called. I grew up surrounded by urban imagery in Greece, and that’s probably why I want to incorporate something similar into my work. I often create provocative pieces, probably to ‘provoke’. Not necessarily in a negative way. Simply because I’m expressing what’s on my mind. By showing what’s going through my head, perhaps that’s what provokes. I don’t want too many elements in my works to be obvious. I prefer the viewer to have to look at the work for a long time in order to recognise the figures, the shapes and the faces I’m depicting. What I’m trying to achieve is for the viewer to see what they’re meant to see. Everyone should have their own reading and interpretation. After all, the different perspectives of each individual are ultimately the most important thing to me.
