Artist Statement
Anna Leisner’s works hover between dream and reality. In her paintings, figurative forms blend with ornamental surfaces, and vibrant colours with subtle symbolism. Her motifs – animals, mythological figures, hearts, tears and floral elements – appear as reflections of inner states: embodiments of emotion and memory that stem from a highly personal visual language. The stories her works tell often take shape in her dreams or in her mind during the day. She observes everyday situations closely, gathering impressions, colours and moods, and transforms these into a visual language. In the interplay of transparency and density, structure and dissolution, a rhythm emerges that is reminiscent of dream logic – poetic, slightly shifted, yet precisely observed.
However, her aim is not to impose a fixed narrative – rather, she invites viewers to discover their own interpretations, memories and inner images within her works and to imbue the motifs with personal meanings. In this way, visual worlds develop that open up spaces in which intuition, inner thought processes and symbolism merge and coalesce into atmospheric scenes.
Leisner works primarily with the mosaic technique or creates oil paintings, supplemented by prints. Her areas of colour are rich and high in contrast, and the compositions grow organically: patterns form, then dissolve again, allowing figures to emerge. She is particularly interested in mosaics, as images arise from many small, fragmented pieces – just as memories, feelings and relationships are composed of individual moments. In this process, every detail takes on significance, for the sum of the small parts ultimately forms a multi-layered whole that each person can interpret in their own way.
