About the artwork:
As part of my newly launched ‘Eye Contact’ series from 2024, I am creating a formal interplay of contrasts. Rough brushstrokes alternate with realistic elements, finely rendered in oil. A symbiosis of tension and relaxation, and ultimately a play on painterly qualities. As for the title, it is worth noting that here, too, a deliberate emphasis has been placed on contrast. The top hat, which has become a symbol of the bourgeoisie, paired with the doctoral title of one of the two eponymous figures, stands in stark contrast to his childishly sounding name ‘Rasselmann’. The brown, triangular object he holds in his hand could also be seen as the inspiration for the title.
But who is his companion, whose ruff also evokes times gone by, and what is this peculiar duo experiencing in front of the architectural arcades in the background?

Martin Collmann
In his paintings, Collmann focuses almost exclusively on the human figure as his central thematic motif, portraying it in an abstract manner and creating a process-driven interplay of colours and forms that combines a dynamic brushstroke with graphic elements – the result is a compelling symbiosis in which gestural freedom and compositional rigour interpenetrate.
Thematically, he operates on the borderline between abstraction and figuration, exploring the fragile balance between closeness and distance in human interaction. The works thus serve as surfaces onto which emotional ambivalences are projected, reflecting both the longing for intimacy and the need for individuality.
