The work depicts a fruit at the moment of bursting open. On the outside, it is luminous and resilient; on the inside, it is exposed, vulnerable and visible. The clear form of the dragon fruit is surrounded by spontaneous splashes of colour, which appear to represent energy, pressure or movement, and disturb the tranquil core.
The contrasts between the outer shell and the interior, between control and chance, lie at the heart of the work. Whilst the fruit can be interpreted as a symbol of growth and self-expression, the exposed interior points to vulnerability and openness – a state that embodies both strength and risk.
The work oscillates between playful colourfulness and serious intimacy. It captures a moment in which something previously protected becomes visible, and poses the question of what it means to reveal oneself without losing oneself.
Star
, I’m Charlie Matthew, also known as StAR.
Since 2018, my life has revolved around painting. After completing my degree in graphic design in 2025, I began studying fine art at the HfBK Dresden.
My works are nostalgic, left-leaning pieces that explore my own emotional worlds.
Each piece captures a moment that isn’t clear-cut – a state of in-between. Lines, colours and shapes reflect inner processes that can’t always be put into words. The works invite you to recognise yourself in these transitions, regardless of gender or identity.
