The painting depicts the crumbling of the red cliff, which symbolises the transformation of the island of Sylt. The two figures represent my sense of distance and alienation from the island.

The work is currently on display at the SKM Gallery in Leipzig and cannot be dispatched until after the exhibition ends in early May.

Jonathan Lützen

Jonathan Lützen’s painting evolves from an open-ended process of applying, overpainting and rearranging. Broad areas of colour, transparent layers and precise interventions combine to create pictorial spaces that lie somewhere between organic movement and geometric structure. Forms emerge, overlap and then dissolve once more. At times, they are reminiscent of landscapes, bodies or architectural fragments, without coalescing into a definitive representation.

Vibrant colours, abrupt transitions and visible traces of the working process keep the compositions in motion. The painting emerges as an ongoing negotiation between intuitive application and conscious decision-making.

Jonathan Lützen has been studying in Professor Christian Hahn’s painting class since 2023.
