The collage brings together four works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in a dynamic dialogue:
‘Self-Portrait’ (1937, oil on canvas)
‘The Family’ (1928/29, oil on canvas)
‘Russian Dancer’ (1909, oil on canvas)
‘Two Nudes in the Wood II’ (1926, oil on canvas).
They are superimposed and linked by colours, lines and planes, rendered in acrylics, pastel chalk and oil pastels.
The intention behind the collage was to place the various facets of Kirchner’s work – ranging from introspective self-portraiture and familial intimacy to dance-like movement and natural nudity – within a new context.
They raise questions: Who am I in relation to my pictures? What role do community, physicality and expression play in my life?
It is a quiet dialogue with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner himself.
I respond to him by placing his works in new contexts – as if I were continuing his language without seeking to copy it.
Kirchner’s view of people – caught between closeness and distance, between joy and vulnerability – is reflected in my own feelings.
In this way, the work becomes an encounter transcending time and space, a dialogue between artist and viewer, between past and present.
