Oil on canvas, 2024
The painting, a grisaille portrait of a young man, was created in 2024 as part of the series ‘Hütte aufm Berg’, produced for the artist’s first solo exhibition of the same name.
As part of the exhibition, the artist explored the need to reconnect with nature, a theme that takes on particular significance against the backdrop of the turbulent and challenging times in which we live. The works offer a glimpse into a parallel world, far removed from the world’s problems and challenges, and thus highlight just how important it is to look after one’s own mental health in the face of these difficulties.
The exhibition aims to invite visitors to indulge in the occasional escape from everyday life, to withdraw, to ground themselves – and where better to do so than in a small cabin without electricity, deep in the mountains.
Please note: Due to an artistic research residency in Vienna, commissioned works cannot be dispatched until October 2025.
Antonia Ceric
has been studying Fine Art at the Offenbach University of Art and Design in Offenbach am Main since 2022, with an interdisciplinary focus on sculpture in the class of
Mike Bouchet. Alongside her artistic practice, she brings an academic background in neuroscience – a combination that significantly shapes her work.
In her painting, she employs classical oil painting techniques, in particular the traditional grisaille method, which she uses especially for portraits. Her aim is not merely to capture outward resemblance, but to visualise inner states, atmospheres and mental spaces. Her paintings are precise observations of expression, gestures and interpersonal dynamics – at once analytical and poetic.
Although traditionally executed on canvas, Čerič approaches painting sculpturally: she does not view the picture as a flat surface, but as a spatial experience that actively engages the viewer. Perception – in both its psychological and physiological dimensions – plays a central role in this. Her affinity with brain research and the theory of perception is subtly woven into the composition, colour scheme and visual guidance of her works.
In printmaking, too, Čerič experiments with various forms of intaglio printing. Alongside classical etchings, she develops unorthodox drypoint engravings, in which she uses electric rotary tools to create complex textures and an almost drawing-like immediacy. These works are characterised by a particular lightness and rhythmic density.
