Nshan (նշան) ist armenisch und bedeutet „Symbol oder Zeichen“. Manchmal wenn wir in die Wolken schauen, meinen wir Dinge zu erkennen, die wir schon kennen. Dasselbe Phänomen lässt sich auch mit dem Blick in die Kaffeetasse wiederfinden. In diesem Werk sind genau diese vermeintlichen Symbole eingearbeitet, jedoch zum Großteil so abstrahiert, dass die Muster vermutlich nicht immer gleich gedeutet werden.

Erika Barsegian

Erika Barsegian is studying art at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. Her artistic focus is on acrylic painting, drawing on her Armenian roots as a source of inspiration for her work. She is particularly fascinated by the traditional custom of reading coffee grounds, which has a long history in her culture. In her art, she gives this ancient practice a modern interpretation.

In coffee grounds reading, the patterns that emerge in the dregs of a cup are traditionally used to provide insights into the past, present and future. Erika, however, goes beyond this symbolism. For her, the patterns are not merely signs to be interpreted, but rather complete images that tell a story of their own. She captures the feeling she experiences when looking at the cup and translates this into her art. This often results in works that begin realistically but become completely abstract as the painting process progresses.
