Nshan (նշան) is Armenian and means ‘symbol or sign’. Sometimes, when we look at the clouds, we think we recognise things we already know. The same phenomenon can also be observed when looking into a coffee cup. This work incorporates precisely these supposed symbols, though for the most part they are so abstracted that the patterns are unlikely to be interpreted in the same way every time.

In coffee grounds reading, the patterns that emerge in the dregs of a cup are traditionally used to provide insights into the past, present and future. Erika, however, goes beyond this symbolism. For her, the patterns are not merely signs to be interpreted, but rather complete images that tell a story of their own. She captures the feeling she experiences when looking at the cup and translates this into her art. This often results in works that begin realistically but become completely abstract as the painting process progresses.
It
is therefore worth taking a closer look at the paintings, as hidden symbols sometimes reveal themselves that are not visible at first glance.
