Info:

This print was created a few weeks after the first print, “Origin Helix II”, but is chronologically earlier in the series.

The building was constructed shortly after Blue Origin’s first manned mission to Mars. The aim was to create a landmark with high recognition value. Furthermore, the curved shape is modelled on the second headquarters of Amazon.com, thereby creating a link to the source of wealth – that of the founder of Amazon and Blue Origin – Jeff Bezos. Unlike “Origin Helix II”, the façade of the Helix is not yet overgrown at the time of the early colony, as the Martian atmosphere is not yet dense enough to allow complex plants to photosynthesise. The intense cosmic radiation also poses a challenge to humans, which is why most of life still takes place beneath the red dunes of Mars.

The first work from each edition was exhibited, in combination with “Origin Helix II”. They formed part of the Results Exhibition 2022, as well as a module final assessment. The works were presented in white-glazed frames (40 x 50 cm) by Max Aab, with doré paper as the passe-partout. It has become apparent that dark frames are also well suited and, moreover, offer a fresh perspective on the image thanks to the greater contrast. In the case of “Origin Helix I”, dark framing emphasises the monumentality of the building.

Nils Ullenboom

Nils Ullenboom (1998) is studying art and chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen. His work blends scientific curiosity with a love of artistic experimentation: theoretical chemistry, quantum physics and motifs from ‘near-future fiction’ serve as his intellectual laboratory, from which he draws inspiration for his paintings, drawings and prints. Naturalistic paintings, precise drawings and abstract, experimental prints reflect on questions concerning the structure of matter, the determinism of the universe and societal developments. His works offer viewers an engaging encounter and an opportunity to compare them with their own worldviews, whilst awakening an intellectual delight in philosophical and scientific inquiry.
