The work depicts a half-concealed figure in a red hoodie, surrounded by everyday objects such as medication, nicotine products and consumer goods. They float within the pictorial space like fragments of an inner state, forming a silent inventory of functioning. The gesture of the hand in front of the face appears both protective and withholding – a moment between visibility and withdrawal.
The composition addresses self-medication, coping strategies and the normalisation of addictions in the everyday lives of young adults. The objects depicted are not morally charged, but observed dispassionately: they represent routines, perseverance and attempts to maintain control over inner states.
In terms of colour, a muted, earthy background dominates, isolating the figure whilst at the same time anchoring it. The image oscillates between intimacy and distance, between self-portrait and a generational snapshot. It offers no diagnosis, but rather opens up a space for identification, ambivalence and quiet criticism of society’s expectations of performance and stability.

, I’m Charlie Matthew, also known as StAR.
Since 2018, my life has revolved around painting. After completing my degree in graphic design in 2025, I began studying fine art at the HfBK Dresden.
My works are nostalgic, left-leaning pieces that explore my own emotional worlds.
Each piece captures a moment that isn’t clear-cut – a state of in-between. Lines, colours and shapes reflect inner processes that can’t always be put into words. The works invite you to recognise yourself in these transitions, regardless of gender or identity.
