This image is inspired by the freedom and vitality that the sea exudes. It captures a moment full of movement, lightness and trust – that feeling of being carried by a wave and, for a moment, forgetting everything around you. The sound of the water, the salty air and the power of the ocean create a state in which only the present moment matters.
The scene emerged intuitively and continued to evolve throughout the painting process. I was particularly interested in capturing this interplay of energy and serenity – the balance between control and letting go. With every layer of paint, the painting became freer and more vibrant.
For me, the work represents the feeling of escaping everyday life for a moment and letting oneself be carried away entirely by one’s own joy. It serves as a reminder of how liberating it can be to go with the flow, to be courageous and to approach life with a light heart.

Vanessa Marscholek
Her painting is characterised by a sensitive handling of oil as a medium, through which intimacy and presence unfold simultaneously. Figures emerge and assert themselves within the pictorial space without being clearly defined. They remain in motion, open to interpretation. This creates a tension between visibility and inner experience, inviting viewers to reflect on their own notions of freedom and identity.
Vanessa Marscholek has been studying Art Therapy (BA) at the Medical School Hamburg, Campus Arts and Social Change, since 2023 and is currently in her sixth semester.
From late 2023 to early 2026, she volunteered at the Habibi Atelier in Hamburg, where she was involved in the conception and organisation of exhibitions for charitable purposes. In this role, she collaborated with over 40 Hamburg-based artists and supported, amongst others, the Sternenbrücke children’s hospice (2024) and the Löwenhaus children’s and youth centre (2025).
She lives and studies in Hamburg.
