Description of the work
In this expressive composition, organic forms, bold areas of colour and dynamic lines come together to form a multi-layered visual structure. Delicate shades of rosé and peach meet vibrant blue, rich green, warm ochre and deep burgundy. The colours overlap and intertwine, creating a captivating interplay of proximity and distance, density and openness.
Black and light lines criss-cross the picture plane like tentative movements. They delineate forms from one another whilst simultaneously linking them into a coherent rhythm. In places, the composition is reminiscent of plant structures or microscopic organisms, without committing to a single, unambiguous representational interpretation.
The painting invites the viewer to oscillate between abstraction and recognition. Forms seem to shift as one looks at them, emerging and then disappearing again within the multi-layered fabric of colour. This creates a pictorial space that describes less a specific place than it opens up a vivid sensory experience.
Artistic classification
In her painting, Julia Sophia Neundorf explores the interplay of colour, form and immediate perception. The gestural application of paint and the organic-looking contours lend the work a palpable dynamism. The composition arises from the tension between free areas of colour and linear structures, between controlled application and painterly openness.
The colours do not function solely as a means of representation, but as independent conveyors of mood and expression. The work unfolds its effect through contrasts, rhythmic repetitions and the simultaneity of different visual levels.
This gives rise to an abstract visual language that leaves room for personal associations and makes perception itself the subject of contemplation.

CONCEPT & PROCESS
“For me, the act of painting represents a way of communicating something I cannot put into words. I don’t really think or paint – I simply exist in the moment, acting intuitively and reacting. My focus is on immediate experience, clarity and leaving questions open. I don’t see myself as a storyteller – my work conveys a feeling rather than a story. There may be a lot of history behind it, but you don’t need to know it to grasp it. It’s comparable to music. You don’t need to understand the score of a symphony to enjoy it – you can simply experience the sounds.”
BACKGROUND
Julia Sophia Neundorf has been living and working in Erfurt since 2014. She has been an artist with the Meet Frida Foundation in Hamburg since 2024 and has exhibited several times in the Hanseatic city as well as in Berlin. She began drawing on her plaster cast at a very early age, following a serious accident involving her cervical spine and a related near-death experience. Once she was able to walk again, she never stopped being creative and quickly developed this into her greatest passion: painting. Early extracurricular support in the field of art paved the way for her future. She became a sculptor in 2013 and subsequently began studying art and literary studies. Since 2019, she has been working in her own studio alongside her studies.
