Encaustic, wax, varnish and oil on raw nettle canvas

2025

The beeswax mixture is melted down and coloured with oil paint, wax paint and special pigments. Whilst still liquid, the wax is poured onto the canvas. Once hardened, the work is treated with UV varnish to seal the image.

Can be hung in a modular arrangement; can be combined with other works in the series – see the last image.

Lenny Renz

From the window, I watch the purple light reflecting off the wet tarmac.

A sigh. A brief shake of my head; the collar of my coat points towards the sky. It’s not just my scuffed Bundeswehr trainers that bear witness to that night as I open the door to step outside.

Being spoilt for choice is usually also a way of numbing the present. Oh, it’s already over…

.

I’m Lenny Renz; I previously studied art at the UdK Berlin and am now at the ZHdK in Zurich.

My focus is primarily on painting and print techniques.

The term ‘mixed media’ (actually, it’s two words) is one of the most vague descriptions in the art world. Nevertheless, it fits my style well. Wax, tape, industrial paint, oil and transfer prints are the tools of my trade. My studio is (mostly) never tidy. Printouts lie scattered on the floor. The brushes are soaking in solvent. It smells of beeswax. Canvases are moved around, hung up and laid down. Priming, painting, overpainting, setting aside, trampling on, continuing to work. Many of my works undergo a long process. A deep massage into the fabric. Sometimes I have a rough idea, but often my subconscious takes over. Many of my works emerge from this sense of vertigo.

I try to let the craftsmanship shine through in my expression.

Nothing is perfect, but that is precisely what makes it so beautiful.
