The work Saturn with Sunflowers is inspired by the diverse occult and dualistic interpretations of Saturn. In mythology and esotericism, Saturn often appears as an ambivalent figure: as the guardian of the threshold, the god of prosperity, but also as a symbol of death. This ambiguity is reflected in the depiction. The figure carries a lantern that lights the way across the threshold – towards enlightenment, prosperity, death, or something else that the viewer can interpret for themselves. The halo above the figure’s head poses the provocative question: does Saturn deserve to wear it? Is he a saviour or a seducer?

The glazing technique lends depth to the pictorial space, and the sunflowers, painted in a thick, impasto style, extend this space from the two-dimensional plane into our three-dimensional world.

This contrast in painting technique creates a back-and-forth shift in the viewer’s perspective. And this constant change of perspective opens up the work in a new and unfamiliar way.
