Brief description:

As a Korean artist, my work explores in depth the cultural differences between Asia and Europe. I combine inspiration from Korean folk art with Western painting techniques that I learnt during my training.

The ‘Schrank’ series is inspired by European peasant painting, though the motifs – such as plants, animals and ornaments – are drawn from the Korean folk art form known as Minhwa 민화.

Minhwa refers to folk painting that has been created and used by ordinary people since the Joseon Dynasty. It was far more than mere decoration, as the images depicted the wishes and hopes of everyday life in symbolic form. For example, cranes, deer, pine trees and the mushroom of immortality (Bullocho) represent the wish for a long life. Depicted pairs of animals – such as ducks or birds – symbolise marital harmony and the happiness of a lasting partnership. In addition, there are also symbols representing scholarship, offspring, prosperity or general happiness in life. Taken as a whole, Minhwa paintings reflect the wish that people’s hopes for their own lives may be fulfilled.

Artist Statement

: “I have a keen interest in traditional arts in general and find particular inspiration in traditional Korean folk art. I express this through Western painting techniques which I learnt during my training. On the one hand, this serves to ease my homesickness; on the other, because traditional folk art is often more than just aesthetic objects. It frequently contains primal and symbolic elements that reflect the rich cultural history of a people and serve as a source of inspiration for me. The figures in my works are created through exaggeration, distortion and abstraction. Through my art, I tell stories about my origins, my dreams or even the story of a third person. I use various materials and techniques, as I select the most suitable media and formats depending on the theme in order to convey the content I have created in the best possible way."
