This is a sketch for a larger painting from 2020 (last picture). *The Lovers* explores the concept of love in relation to its often superficial positive connotations. As Erich Fromm described in *The Art of Loving*, love is not something universally bestowed upon us, but rather an art that must be mastered. As the initial phase of being in love fades, so too does the veil that obscures everything but the positive aspects of the person we hold dear. It is at this stage that true love – or the notion of what we believe to be love – comes to light. *The Lovers* depicts this turning point: will love prevail, or will it fade away, as it so often does?

My artistic practice is rooted in the tradition of postmodern intertextuality. Drawing on the ideas of Umberto Eco, I do not view works of art as self-contained objects, but as open, unfinished products that only reveal their meaning through interaction with the viewer. The act of perception thus becomes an integral part of the work.
At the centre of my work is the human being – though not as a clearly defined figure, but as an abstract form that is constantly changing. I see this mutability as an expression of a critical engagement with scientific and social constructions of what it means to be human. By deconstructing these concepts, I open up a space in which identity, perception and the body can be re-examined.
