Herwig’s works emerge from landscapes whilst simultaneously breaking free from them. Coasts and forests, blackberry hedges, cactus landscapes and mountainous worlds form the starting point for her painting, though not as motifs in the classical sense, but as spaces of experience. Herwig approaches landscapes through perception and mood, through what takes root in the body and
remains
as
an impression. Her paintings move towards abstraction, towards open spaces of colour in which forms emerge, shift and dissolve again. Rather than expressive exaggeration, she seeks the moment in which tension arises without imposing itself. The works appear as counter-spaces that enable a different form of attention, whilst at the same time having a calming, focused and sensitive effect on nuances. In a world of constant movement and sensory overload, they rely on a quiet presence that does not
assert itself
loudly
, but rather lingers. Formally, Herwig’s work is based on physical movement and speed. The painting process is rhythmic and direct, characterised by gestural brushstrokes and intense colour. Working with distemper and pigments creates a distinctive luminosity that lends the paintings a distinctive, atmospheric density.
