A diptych, painted en plein air in oil on wood.
Dimensions including frame: 37.5 x 25.5
Dimensions of each panel: 21.5 x 16.5
The paint is applied in a thick, impasto style using very high-quality oil paints, all in a single sitting. The support panels have been thoroughly sealed and primed to ensure they are resistant to fluctuating room temperatures and atmospheric conditions. Wood is particularly suitable as a support for oil paints, as these harden completely over time and are less prone to cracking on a solid painting surface.
I have mounted the two thin wooden panels in a self-built recessed-joint frame; the wood of the frame has been lightly sanded on the outer edges to prevent splintering, but is left rough-sawn and treated only with a wood preservative. The inside of the frame is painted with a highly durable epoxy paint. This rustic style complements the impasto-like, vigorous painting style well.
A paper seal (copperplate engraving) is affixed to the back of the backing board; three drill holes are provided to allow the artwork to be hung on one or two nails.
PS: I would like to post the picture no earlier than 15 September, as the paint needs a little more time to dry; I would appreciate your understanding. :)
Valentin Weller
I began my artistic career with an apprenticeship as a stonemason and sculptor. I am now studying figurative painting at Alanus University in Andreas Orosz’s class.
The subjects of my paintings are varied, and what they all have in common is, above all, a wide-ranging interest in the world. I pursue my spirit of discovery using various methods; sometimes I paint from memory, but whenever possible I also enjoy painting ‘en plein air’ on location. My enjoyment of various photographic techniques also helps me to engage with a subject.
