Niklas Leonard
Previously, he studied architecture at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) and completed an apprenticeship as a joiner at the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg. These diverse educational backgrounds shape his current artistic approach and his handling of materials, space and construction.
In his works, Niklas explores forms, structures and spaces. His starting point is graphic compositions that develop from an expressive, intuitive style of painting and are further refined through incisions and milling in painted wooden panels. Forms that emerge during the process are taken up, shifted and elaborated upon; they oscillate between typography and typology, between symbolism and spatial order. These abstract relief images are not merely visual objects, but physical works that absorb, structure and help to shape the space in which they are situated.
