My paintings, which incorporate elements of drawing, explore the process of working spontaneously. Intuitively chosen colour palettes navigate the tension between working quickly and maintaining a sense of restraint in front of the canvas. The predominantly serial nature of the creative process allows for a repeated exploration of similar colours and materials in ever-changing ways. Layer by layer, small abstract worlds emerge in which a delicate little line either struggles against a rough expanse of colour or harmonises with it.
The luminous, sculptural works are the result of a personal engagement with the indigenous peoples and pre-Hispanic advanced civilisations of Mexico. With a Mexican mother and a German father, exploring these foreign yet strangely familiar cultures enables me to come to terms, on a deeply personal level, with family experiences, the worldviews of different cultures and the associated search for a sense of belonging.
