Jannis Kustak
In his paintings
, Kustak explores nature in depth, emphasising the tension between transience and rebirth. He uses expressive, deliberately unnatural colour palettes and clear contours, which lend his works a striking, almost graphic effect.
His works straddle the line between draughtsmanlike precision and classical painting, as he simultaneously utilises painterly depth and varied textures. A central component of his painting process is a base layer of acrylic paint, which interacts with the overlying layers of oil paint. This underlying layer of paint shows through in places, creating subtle breaks and lending the paintings a dynamic surface movement. Inspired by bark textures, branching patterns and organic structures, Kustak develops complex pictorial spaces
that interlock and exhibit both naturalistic and abstract qualities.
