"Waiting Room" is part of the "Strangers" series and continues the exploration of anonymous encounters begun in "Waiting Room Aesthetics". The work depicts two female-appearing figures, strangers to one another, in a reception area. They are linked solely by the same action: reading a newspaper. Whether it is the same newspaper remains open to interpretation. The same applies to the location and the reason for their waiting. The two figures appear simplified and anonymous, almost dissolved in their structure and colour. Nevertheless, they seem somehow familiar to us. The work oscillates between closeness and distance, between shared experience and complete strangeness.
Song inspiration: “Carry On” – Jungle
I was inspired by the song’s evocation of that final moment before departure: a timeless pause, somewhere between arrival and farewell. The reception area in my work becomes a kind of transitional space.
Medium:
Oil on canvas
Technique: palette knife technique
Shipping:
The work will be shipped stretched onto a stretcher frame – including a certificate of authenticity and the artist’s signature on the reverse.
Jana Mertens
I used to draw a lot when I was younger. At the age of 16, I began drawing portraits of other people. During my A-levels in Art, I learnt a number of techniques and really enjoyed working with different media, which is why I decided to study Art and Media. Whilst at university, I also started painting more in my spare time and discovered a passion for oil painting. At the moment, I’m exploring Surrealism in depth. Inspired by Edward Hopper and René Magritte, I’ve found a style that suits me. With my series *Strangers*, I’m trying to combine the unfamiliar with something familiar.
