Josefine Däumer
Her work explores form, colour and materiality through painting.
Colour is the fundamental medium of painting, without which it cannot exist. Her work is heavily dependent on the use of colour and its effect, depth and mood. The influence of colour on the viewer’s visual senses plays a significant role in this. For instance, a small, impasto-like dab of colour on a two-dimensional canvas can transform the entire work. The effects of colour can be not only visual, but also emotional and aesthetic. Colour can draw attention to itself through its own properties. It draws attention to itself through its own characteristics (mattness, fluidity, viscosity, impasto). It becomes an autonomous factor. If a viewer focuses their attention solely on what is depicted, they see a coloured surface; but if, on the other hand, they turn their attention to the surface itself, they notice the presence of colour in the here and now and, with it, the materiality of colour.Depending on how the paint is applied, the colour can appear differently and take on a different presence. It is precisely these ideas that Josefine explores in her works.
