Concept
For several years now, I have been fascinated by oil painting because the lustre and saturation of the colours can convey so many moods and a sense of depth.
I am particularly drawn to large formats, as it is here, above all, that I can transform experiences and influences into my own, credible imaginary worlds.
This results in paintings that hover somewhere between reality and fantasy.
Working Method
When painting, I usually begin with a rough underpainting to set an initial direction.
I then work my way forward layer by layer, applying many shades of colour in glazes on top of one another and ensuring that they enhance one another.
I often spend a great deal of time on a single painting – sometimes this simply means sitting next to it for hours on end – because the process is very personal and intuitive.
Rather than sticking strictly to a sketch, I let myself be guided by the emerging areas of colour and moods.
