Fluorescent paint was used in the action painting, amongst other things. This is clearly visible in the example image under black light.
This work depicts an encounter that is not really an encounter. Two figures share a space, yet the contact appears one-sided. The outstretched arm cuts through the distance, whilst the other person withdraws. Closeness and hurt lie inseparably side by side here.
The reduced, almost sketch-like bodies contrast with the impulsive splashes of paint, which are scattered across the scene like emotional outbursts. They allude to inner states: being overwhelmed, pain, but also energy and resistance. The colours cannot be controlled – they simply happen.
The work explores intergenerational encounters, the crossing of boundaries, and the feeling of being shaped or pressured from the outside in one’s own process. At the same time, it remains open as to whether the contact destroys or sets something in motion. This state of limbo is central: a moment between resistance and change.

, I’m Charlie Matthew, also known as StAR.
Since 2018, my life has revolved around painting. After completing my degree in graphic design in 2025, I began studying fine art at the HfBK Dresden.
My works are nostalgic, left-leaning pieces that explore my own emotional worlds.
Each piece captures a moment that isn’t clear-cut – a state of in-between. Lines, colours and shapes reflect inner processes that can’t always be put into words. The works invite you to recognise yourself in these transitions, regardless of gender or identity.
