Jonas Ortmann

Jonas Ortmann (born 1993) lives and works in Surwold. He studied art at the University of Osnabrück, where he engaged intensively with painting, photographic techniques and graphic drawing. This thorough, cross-media training shapes the structure of his current works.

At the heart of his work lies figurative painting of a quiet, almost meditative intensity. The figures are characterised by a deliberate, understated placement within the space, which directs the focus purely onto the relationship between form, materiality and the viewer. Rather than adhering to classical anatomy, the figures often present themselves as biomorphic, lattice-like structures. They appear organic, almost amoeba-like, or like microscopic viscous substances materialising in geometric or surreal spaces.
