Seojeong Park

Statement

My work usually begins with a single form: a shell, a mass, a vague or suggestive shape. These forms are vague memories floating in my mind. Sometimes they can become geometric figures, landscapes or even faces or people. I draw everything I see and everything that has influenced me. These ambiguous forms invite the viewer to interpret them individually. Depending on personal experience or inner memories, what someone sees can be perceived either as a simple form or as a meaningful object. I am often asked: ‘What is that?’ I find it difficult to give a precise answer, and perhaps that is precisely the real answer. All viewers see the same thing, but they associate it with different emotions, memories and stories. I regard this diversity of interpretations as the ‘value’ of my work, and I hope that viewers can experience my works openly and freely, in light of their own values and perspectives.
