The role I have assigned to Theodor W. Adorno is that of the linesman. Intuitively, I feel that the role of philosophers in society corresponds to that of a linesman. The linesman uses a flag to indicate what is right or wrong. The fact that you cannot score a valid goal from an offside position, however beautiful it may be, and that every offside decision could be both relative and incorrect, depending on perspective and the circumstances – or might even be ignored by the referee – makes this context of delusion particularly fascinating to me and has prompted me to paint Adorno in various media – once in oil and once in a technically reproducible form. Incidentally, I’m a big fan of public screenings, and I’m sure that even Walter Benjamin would have been overwhelmed by the aura of a televised football match. Football remains fascinating to me, for in it I find the contradiction between coldness and play / object and subject / passive and active / the process of freedom and coercion.
