This picture depicts a dense, symbolic composition in which figurative elements are combined with abstract splashes of colour. At the centre is a large figure painted in shades of blue and green, leaning over another figure in a manner reminiscent of a medical or intimate act. Surrounding them are collage elements: small photographs of bodies, a portrait with a distorted eye, and the inscription ‘Actually, everything is...’. The colour palette of intense yellow, red and blue creates a sense of tension and drama. The work conveys a feeling of intensity that straddles intimacy, control and sensitivity, whilst simultaneously exploring questions of identity, physicality and reality.
Some elements of this work originate from my older paintings, which I deliberately destroyed. Some of the elements come from torn-up posters I found on the street, and others from old publications I unearthed during hours of searching in Berlin’s second-hand bookshops. Nevertheless, around 90 per cent of the work was created using the medium of painting.

Michal Banasik
Born in 1974 in Szczecin, he also lives and works in Berlin, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. He studied painting at the Academy of Art and Music in Szczecin (Akademia Sztuki w Szczecinie). He specialises primarily in painting and drawing.
In his artistic practice, he readily utilises all available tools, resources and media. This also applies to artificial intelligence tools, which he combines with some of his painterly ideas. However, this openness does not alter his tendency to situate his work primarily at the intersection of painting and drawing.
The spectrum of his thematic inspirations encompasses a wide range of phenomena from different eras: from numerous formal references to art history, myths and studies of magic and religion, right through to everyday themes, which are combined into freely conceived narratives featuring figures, symbols, signs and subjective experiences of a new reality.
