Description

The composition focuses on the interplay between the protective surface of the shell and the soft, living skin of the hands.

Themes such as vulnerability, protection, transformation and hidden inner values – a sensation akin to touching the moist surface of an oyster.

A quiet dialogue unfolds between a rough shell and the warm skin of the hands – what is precious often lies hidden and only becomes visible when someone finds the courage, patience and sensitivity to gently open what is closed.

For centuries, the oyster has been regarded as a symbol of something that appears unremarkable from the outside but may harbour something precious within – such as a pearl. In this painting, it represents hidden beauty, inner strength and the passion of a first touch.

The painted hands are a symbol of powerful expressiveness. They remind us of care, creation, revelation and also of that brief moment of hesitation.

The composition allowed me to depict subtle reflections of light, the delicate skin tones of the hands and stark contrasts between the rough shell and soft human skin, draped in fabric. This creates not only a visual but also a symbolic tension between nature and humanity, protection and revelation.

The shell is rough, closed, small, yet deep within it there may be something precious.

The fingers rest in quiet courage, gentle, warm and full of fervour.

Even in the silent room, they sense that a bright dream lives within.

For what remains firmly closed often conceals more than just one world.

And those who see with their whole heart discover the treasure that glows within.

CONCEPT & PROCESS

“For me, the act of painting represents a way of communicating something I cannot put into words. I don’t really think or paint – I simply exist in the moment, acting intuitively and reacting. My focus is on immediate experience, clarity and leaving questions open. I don’t see myself as a storyteller – my work conveys a feeling rather than a story. There may be a lot of history behind it, but you don’t need to know it to grasp it. It’s comparable to music. You don’t need to understand the score of a symphony to enjoy it – you can simply experience the sounds.”

BACKGROUND

Julia Sophia Neundorf has been living and working in Erfurt since 2014. She has been an artist with the Meet Frida Foundation in Hamburg since 2024 and has exhibited several times in the Hanseatic city as well as in Berlin. She began drawing on her plaster cast at a very early age, following a serious accident involving her cervical spine and a related near-death experience. Once she was able to walk again, she never stopped being creative and quickly developed this into her greatest passion: painting. Early extracurricular support in the field of art paved the way for her future. She became a sculptor in 2013 and subsequently began studying art and literary studies. Since 2019, she has been working in her own studio alongside her studies.
