The work ‘Crystallized’ is part of a series in which I work intuitively with clay, without preconceived ideas or detailed planning. In contrast to my paintings, which are often very precise and realistic, these sculptures emerge from an immediate, impulsive process. For me, they provide a necessary contrast to my other artistic media – a way of gaining some distance and taking a fresh look at my work. In its form, “Crystallized” is reminiscent of salt crystals or natural formations found in nature. What is special about this piece is that it can stand on any side; it has no fixed orientation but changes depending on the viewer’s perspective. At the same time, it features a small opening and a hollow space, meaning the sculpture could also be used as a vase.
The materiality plays a central role: the surface appears crystalline, almost mineral-like, and reinforces the association with naturally formed shapes. As with the entire series, my aim here is to achieve an organic, uncontrolled aesthetic – a counterpoint to the control and precision that characterise many of my other works.
This ceramic was formed from dark clay, pre-fired at 800 °C and then fired with a glaze at 1250 °C, making it waterproof.
Every artwork by the artist Mathilda Augart is dispatched with a signature and a certificate of authenticity.
The piece is currently on display at the SKM Gallery in Leipzig and cannot be dispatched until after the exhibition ends in early May.

Painting
Her painting springs from spontaneous emotion, offering scope for experimentation and the pure joy of creative expression. Whilst academic art education often tends to suppress or conceptualise this authenticity, she carefully preserves it in her painting.
Her creative space allows her to transcend boundaries and make room for the unexpected, resulting in series in which she captures friends and colleagues in various depictions. During the Covid-19 crisis, she also portrayed her neighbourhood, ranging from unaffordable flats to the socially deprived area of Kottbusser Tor.
Her art extends beyond realistic scenes to include depictions of dreams on a surreal level, forming a creative bridge to her sculptural works.

art’s
sculptures are an expression of her artistic vision, which focuses on viewing the human being as an architectural structure. Inspired by her childhood fascination with her ancestors’ doll’s house, every room in this metaphorical house symbolises a unique facet of human character. She sees this complex doll’s house within every individual, representing the multi-layered nature of emotions and experiences. Her art explores the significance of self-awareness and delves into the unconscious microcosm that encompasses dreams and the vast world of the subconscious. Through her sculptures, Augart seeks to play with these elements from dreams and to build a bridge between dream and reality.
